When do we use the present continuous?

We use the present continuous to describe something temporary that is happening right now (in the present). It may continue into the near future.

To form the present continuous tense

• auxiliary verb to be (am/is/are)
• + verb in present participle form (-ing)

What are they doing?

• She is walking
• She is reading
• She is running
• They are eating
• He is dancing

Note the contracted forms.

Other examples

• I am typing
• The baby is crying
• You are drinking
• The dogs are barking
• They are laughing
• He is painting
• The children are playing
